Mark shared a big open-plan office with a couple of other tour guides, including Douglas. It was unglamorously located above some of the visitor toilets and overlooked a courtyard, which was eerily quiet for a Sunday afternoon. The door was open. Mark had his feet on his desk and was covering the pages of a book with little pink sticky notes. Douglas was on the far side of the room, reading something on a computer screen, occasionally turning away in order to feed paper into a shredder.
âCan you believe it?â he was complaining. âShe must have written it the minute she got home.â
I remained in the doorway. âGentlemen. Working hard?â
Mark didnât move. âAlways,â he responded. I stared at him.
âDonât you stand when a lady enters the room?â
âRefer to my previous answer.â I couldnât help but laugh. He could be so predictable. âYouâre letting all the heat out.â
I closed the door behind me, feeling like a nagging mother. I wheeled a chair next to Mark and collapsed into it.
âIâve just come to say ta-ra, Iâm going home. Caffeine is keeping me standing, but I can feel it swilling round my brain and Iâm no use to anyone. Iâm done in.â
Douglas let out a loud sigh. âI wish someone had done her in.â He sighed again.
âWhat are you moaning about?â Mark asked. âSpit it out instead of huffing and puffing.â
âThat sodding woman, sheâs already written up a review for last night. Trying to get in on the action, I bet, get some publicity for her blog.â
âYou mean Philippa?â I asked.
âWho else would take such pleasure in tearing me to shreds in front of the whole world? Sheâs not right in the head, I swear.â
Mark got up and walked over to Douglas, leaning over his shoulder, reading the review.
âWow, she really doesnât like you.â
âTell me about it. Sheâs also commented on Lyciaâs age, not being young enough to play Ellen, and that not all the guests did their research before signing up for the event.â
âThatâll be a reference to those who went to the Black Swan,â I commented.
âBut then she goes on to talk about Conrad. She reckons he continues to give the, and I quote, âfinest portrayal of Charles Dickens in living memoryâ. The rest of the evening gets the thumbs up as well. Of course, she revels in the drama of the night, makes it sound like she was personally at risk and only narrowly escaped the clutches of death. If only.â
He sat back with an air of defeat.
âWait, she wasnât on your tour, she was on mine. How could she review your tour?â
âShe canât, but it doesnât stop her. If you look at it, sheâs worded it very carefully: âknown for his inaccuracies⦠ever the showman, yet unable to convey the significance of the Fitzwilliam-Scott familyâs role in British historyââ¦â
Mark glanced up and caught my eye. I saw a very slight smile in the corner of his lips.
âYou had that mate of hers. Was he rolling his eyes at every
